Debbi Murphy, PhD, ERYT
A child of the sixties, Debbi Murphy has been intrigued by the Mind-Body connection for decades. Emerson, Joseph Campbell, Thoreau, Jung, Kenneth Cooper, Bonnie Bainbridge were her heroes as she studied poetry, psychology, philosophy and exercise physiology at the University of Missouri. While in graduate school, she represented the University of Missouri Medical Center as their “Health Guru”, taught Exercise Physiology and Psychology at Stephens College. She also took her first yoga class and fell in love; it seemed the nexus of all her passions.
In the early ‘90‘s, she completed her Phd in Exercise Science with a minor in Psychology and headed out to Idaho where she had access to wilderness, mountains and rivers….and master teachers like John Friend, Richard Freeman, Rodney Yee, Shiva Rea and Seane Corn. She felt she had truly “come home” when she studied with Erich Schiffman. Inspired to provide a space dedicated to “finding peace within”, she created Shanti Yoga Studio and School in McCall, Idaho. Since then, she’s expanded her school and teaching to Boise and leads retreats in Sayulita, Mexico and other venues.
From her experience of teaching yoga for decades, Debbi strongly believes in yoga’s transformative power…to bring more peace and health to it’s practitioners and therefore, to the world. Her “smart flow” style is informed by her background in biomechanics and exercise physiology….her integration of poetry and spirituality is influenced by her study of the early Transcendentalists, and her attention to the emotional & cognitive aspects of yoga is influenced by her study of psychology and ancient yoga scriptures. Her light hearted and compassionate tone is inspired by the true nature of yoga….bliss.
